Dr. Chris Friesen is a psychologist who has always been fascinated by what makes people successful. He is a licensed clinical, forensic, and neuropsychologist but now primarily helps professional, national/Olympic, and up-and-coming elite athletes, as well as other high achievers such as professionals, entrepreneurs, executives, academics, and writers, achieve their personal and professional potential. He is currently director of Friesen Sport & Performance Psychology and is the author of Achieve: Find Out Who You Are, What You Really Want, and How To Make It Happen. What is your background?

Dr. Friesen started out as a teenager who struggled with negative emotions and did not perform well in school. He discovered his outlet was playing hockey. After playing hockey for four or five years he realized this was not going to be a career for him, and he needed to start thinking about the future. He got into reading self-help books by people like Tony Robbins and worked on changing his mindset. After raising his grades, he attended college to study Psychology.

Dr. Friesen has worked with all kinds of people in his earlier career, from murderers and gang members to high-achieving athletes, entrepreneurs and professionals.

“I really wanted to get a diverse set of experiences so I could fully understand the full spectrum of human potential; people at their best, and their worst.”

How do sports tie in to your business?

Dr. Friesen said it was natural for him to move into the niche of athletes considering his hockey background, and involvement and interest in health and fitness.

“I love learning about nutrition, I love learning about how to better yourself and the physiology behind it. It was super fascinating to me, so it was sort of a natural leap for me to go more into working with athletes.”

What do you like most about what you do?

Dr. Friesen prefers working with highly motivated professional and high achieving athletes. He is able to relate more with them and use practices that he implements in his own life.

“Myself being a highly motivated person; let’s say I’ve worked with a lot of people that have no motivation to change, that can be very frustrating.”

What are the personality tendencies/traits and how do they work?

There are five global tendencies. These tendencies are a set of traits, characteristics and ways of thinking, feeling and behaving.

“These have a genetic component, about 50% of the differences between people on these five basic personality tendencies are inherited, it helps to predict how other people are likely to behave and respond to things.”

1- Negative emotions
2- Extroversion vs. Introversion
3- Openness to change and new experiences
4- Agreeableness
5- Motivation and self-control

How do entrepreneurs implement this in their business?

Integrating this into your business helps you understand what types of personality traits you are working with, so you can better serve your clients, whether it is a meal plan or an exercise routine. You will be able to identify what will resonate with them more.

“The biggest problem in the self-help book industry is there is this idea that one size fits all (and) that we are all the same. We all know there are differences between us and definitely there are differences in personality.
